I don't know who comes off as being less unprofessional. The guy behind the desk or the guy in the door way.
Both of these idiots are probably arguing about $20... twenty bucks that would be better spent on a short course dealing with body language.
Video and sound recording of conversations might very well be illegal in your area without the consent of both parties and well posted visible signage.
The dispute is more than $$$, it is manufacturer guidelines on repair.
As for video, most states allow any business to monitor their premises. From experience I have found that no matter how many signs you have stating that fact, it is quickly forgotten by the visitors.

This happened at the shop of someone we know. Lee Amaradio. He's looking for a little justice where there is none and none will come - unless he makes his own by ignoring the insurer and charging the difference to the vehicle owner. I'm pretty sure he has figured that out by now - if not it won't be long.
I'm with you Tim this kind of thing would take big signage in my state. But... is legal when properly done. I hope he keeps it up. Supposedly two more videos are on the way.
Dealing with Insurance Companies is just like the State Lottery - a tax on the weak minded and math impaired.
I have been advised that I MUST also post a sign. And, if I am going to record conversation I MUST also post a sign. Also, if recording telephone conversations I MUST notify the other party of my intent prior to doing it.
In the office I simply keep a dictation recorder handy just for such situations. We take it out of the drawer and lay it on the counter almost every time we have some idiot that is known to talk the talk. When the sht gets deep we just reach over and say "I'm going to record this conversation for my customer so he stays on the same page. Is that OK" The tune changes immediately.
Just always be sure to identify yourself and state a reason for the recording and have the other fellow identify himself also prior to continuing your conversation.
I have few good recordings of my own. They are not posted on the web and I'm not sure of the procedure on this site for uploading media. i do not see an option for uploading sound medaia files... too bad. They are funny! You would enjoy them.
On several occasions we have had the customer sitting nearby and within clear ear shot of the conversations... needless to say that is a very effective technique as well. It is always as if the floor drops out from under the poor guy when the customer finaly indentifies himself... I can only imagine what it must feel like to be caught telling lies, make disparging statements and denials right there and on the spot.
As a result of course my business gets a sorted reputation with the particular insurance company or appraisal business. I have only used such tactics when I find a customer who is being seriously taken advantage of, or when a certain appraiser needs to be adjusted, lol. You would be suprised how word gets around.
I think we all agree that a very large percentage of the industry(s) need to learn how to do business fairly. honestly, legaly. Until that day comes businesses like mine don't have a chance.
You see my business treats everyone with respect and honesty. We have integrity and a reputation to uphold.:p:p:p

anyhow, every state law governing recording is different.
Let's see. Shop guy handles what, 10-15 a day and wastes how much time for not enough money at 8 hours to begin with?
I wonder how many hundreds of millions of dollars of hours are wasted in the collision shops across the country with such senseless crap?
That video is non productive totally wasted money for both parties.
This is the kind of crap repairers need to get away from as quickly as they can......

Leader Lee still thinks he can "neogtiate" with insurers. What did his negotiations get him here? A lost customer?
The irony is that he is now experiencing the pain he caused others... :D
Ain't life grand....
